[edit] ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The origin of the name Zuma is unclear. There are several possibilities.
- Zuma is a clan name from the Zulu tribe of Africa.[1]
- Zuma may be a variation of the Arabic name Zulema, which derives from Salome or Solomon, both of which mean "peace."[2] Zulema and its shortened forms can also mean "healthy" and "full of life." [3]
- Zuma may mean "new day" or "solution" in the ancient Mayan language.[4]
- Zuma may be related to the name Moctezuma, which means "he frowns like a lord" in the Classical Nahuatl language spoken by the Aztecs. Moctezuma I and Moctezuma II were ancient Aztec emperors.[5] A similar name, Montezuma, was the name of a mythological hero in the area that is now the Southwestern United States.[6]
- Zuma means "running horse" in Japanese.[7]
[edit] POPULARITY
In the United States, Zuma is an uncommon name. It has not appeared in the top 1000 most popular names list in any recorded year.[8] However, with the recent appearance of Gwen Stephani and Gavin Rossdale's new baby named Zuma, usage of the name could possibly increase.
Zuma is more often found as a company name, often associated with Japanese cuisine.
