[edit] ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The origin of the name Zuma is unclear. There are several possibilities.

  • Zuma is a clan name from the Zulu tribe of Africa.[1]
  • Zuma may be a variation of the Arabic name Zulema, which derives from Salome or Solomon, both of which mean "peace."[2] Zulema and its shortened forms can also mean "healthy" and "full of life." [3]
  • Zuma may mean "new day" or "solution" in the ancient Mayan language.[4]
  • Zuma may be related to the name Moctezuma, which means "he frowns like a lord" in the Classical Nahuatl language spoken by the Aztecs. Moctezuma I and Moctezuma II were ancient Aztec emperors.[5] A similar name, Montezuma, was the name of a mythological hero in the area that is now the Southwestern United States.[6]
  • Zuma means "running horse" in Japanese.[7]

[edit] POPULARITY

In the United States, Zuma is an uncommon name. It has not appeared in the top 1000 most popular names list in any recorded year.[8] However, with the recent appearance of Gwen Stephani and Gavin Rossdale's new baby named Zuma, usage of the name could possibly increase.

Zuma is more often found as a company name, often associated with Japanese cuisine.

[edit] FACTS

  • Zuma is the name of a market in the capital city of Madagascar, reputed to be the second largest market in the world.[9]
  • Gwen Stephani and Gavin Rossdale named their second child Zuma after Zuma Beach in Malibu, California. The beach was the site of an epiphany for Rossdale, to which he attributes his musical success.[10]
