The name Yale is of Welsh origin, and refers to the fertile uplands of the British moors. [1] It may also refer specifically to the mountain goats that live in those high moors. [2] It was a surname given to people who lived in the uplands, and has since been used as both a first name (mostly for males) and a surname. Some of the first people with the last name Yale came to America in approximately 1637. [3] Yale is now most recognizable as the name of a prestigious American university in Connecticut.
