The name Walter originates from the German “Waldhere” meaning “ruler of an army.” It is a combination of “wald” meaning “ruler” and “heri” meaning “army.” The Old Norman French form of Walter was “Waltier.” The Normans brought the name to England and Ireland. The Gaelic forms of Walter are “Bhaltair,” “Bhatair,” “Ualtar,” “Ualteir,” and “Uailteir.”
