The name Vivian originates from the Latin “Vivianus,” which stems from “vivus” meaning “alive” and was later transferred to the French male name “Vivien” or female "Vivienne" meaning “alive.” In Ireland, the Gaelic form of “Vivian” is “Bebhinn” meaning “sweet lady.”

In Arthurian Legend, Vivian was the Lady of the Lake - the mistress of Merlin.

In the 5th century, Saint Vivian - a French bishop – protected people from the Visigoth invasion. Saint Vivia Perpetua was a martyred Roman.
