ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Virginia derives from the Latin “Verginius” meaning “springlike” or “flourishing.” It was an old Roman surname, which stems from the Latin “ver” meaning “spring.”

Some, apparently mistakenly, think the name originated from the word “virgin.” This belief persists because the state “Virginia,” in the United States, was named after Elizabeth I, known as the “Virgin Queen” because she never married.
