ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Tristan is an old Celtic name, sometimes pronounced Tristan and sometimes Tristram. The name stems from the Byrthonic names 'Drust' or 'Drustanus'. The name Tristan was that of a famous knight of Arthurian Legend (at the Round Table) and the Legend of Tristan and Isolde is one that has been made into many fairy tales, opera, poems and songs. The name is thought to have been influenced by the French word 'triste' which means 'sad'.
The name Tristan is becoming exceedingly popular in the US. Despite a long history as a very rare name in the US, its current status puts it as the 86th most popular male given name. This is a huge gain in popularity since the mid 1990s, when the name was almost down to the 500th most popular boy's given name. The name is also used as a female given name, but is much less popular as a given name for girls (last ranked at 884th in 2002--it's currently off the chart of 1000 most popular female given names).
Tristan ranked as the 34th most popular given name for boys in 2003 in Belgium. In neighboring France, Tristan ranked in at the 45th most popular boy's given name in 2001. In Canada, the name ranked 50th most popular in 2005.
