[edit] ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Topaz comes from the name of a gemstone. It may trace back to the Sanskrit word “tapas,” which means “fire,” or it may come from the Greek “topazos,” meaning “green gem.”[1]
Topaz is a very hard stone, an 8 on the Mohs scale. It may appear in several different colors, though the standard color is a golden yellow. It is hardy and tends to remain undamaged over time.[2]
[edit] POPULARITY
Topaz is a very uncommon name. It has not made the top 1000 most popular names in the United States in any recorded year.[3]
In general, the name Topaz is only used in English-speaking countries.[4]
Though it is not commonly given to babies, Topaz is a fairly popular company name.

[edit] FAMOUS PERSONS
- William Topaz McGonagall holds the title of the worst poet of the English language. He was born in Scotland in approximately 1825, and began writing poetry in 1877.[12] His poetry was so atrocious that when he gave public readings, the crowd was said to have hurled food at him. Despite all of the criticism he received, McGonagall continued to believe he was a great poet. A film called The Great McGonagall was made in the 1970s, starring Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers.[13] There is dubious speculation that McGonagall may in fact have been a satirist whose bad poetry was a literary commentary on the poets of the Victorian era.
