ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Timothy derives from the Greek "time" meaning "honor" or "respect" and "theos" meaning "God." Timothy also has lineage from Greek Timotheus to Latin Timotheus to French Timothee and, eventually, English Timothy. The name was not used in England or the British Isles until the Reformation.

In the New Testament, Saint Timothy, companion of the Apostle Paul, is a young disciple who receives the two letters to Timothy (epistles) in Acts 16.

In Ireland, Timothy Anglicized Tadhg (a poet) and Tomaltach. The Gaelic form of Timothy is Tiomoid.
