ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Thekla as a name originates from the ancient greek given name, Theokleia (Θεοκλεια) which itself means 'glory of God'. It is commonly considered to be of Greek origin, but is also found in both German and English communities and variants such as Takla are found in Lebanon, and Tekla in Russia and Poland. St Thekla is thought of as the first female martyr, depicted in 'The Acts of Paul and Thecla'.
Thekla has several 'name days', as follows. The Hungarian, Swedish and Estonian name day is September 23, in Latvia it is January 21, and in Poland August 30, September 23, October 7 and 15.
