[edit] Name History
The Grateful Dead began as the Warlocks in 1964. Phil Lesh, in his biography, claims that Jerry Garcia found the name in an old Britannica World Language Dictionary. According to this account, the definition there was "the soul of a dead person, or his angel, showing gratitude to someone who, as an act of charity, arranged their burial." However, Alan Trist, who was the director of their music publisher company, said the name was from the Funk & Wagnalls Folklore Dictionary. Captain Trips, in the Garcia biography, states that the band was smoking the psychedelic DMT at the time.[1]
