[edit] ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Stacy has two possible sources, depending on which gender it belongs to.
1)As a girl's name, Stacy appeared as a shortened form of the Greek name Anastasia, which means "resurrection."[1]
2)As a boy's name, Stacy came from the Greek name Eustace, which means "fruitful,"[2] or "bountiful grapes."[3]
It was a boy's name first, but has been overshadowed by usage as a girl's name in recent years.[4]
Stacy, or Stacey, may also occur as a surname. This surname derives from the given name, through the masculine form Stace, which is short for Eustace. This surname has origins in England and Ireland.[5]
[edit] POPULARITY
As a girl's name in the United States, Stacy first appeared on the list of top 1000 most popular girls' names in the year 1949. The height of this name's popularity was between the late 1960s and the mid-1980s. The peak came in 1973, when it ranked as the 32nd most popular girl's name in the United States. Popularity dropped through the 1990s, but has kept a steady place in the 600 ranks of the top 1000. In 2007, Stacy ranked as the 693rd most popular girl's name.[6]
The alternate spelling, Stacey, had a similar trend, first appearing in 1950 and reaching a peak as the 41st most popular girl's name between 1971 and 1973. Popularity of this spelling dropped off more quickly, though, and Stacey last appeared in the top 1000 list in the year 2006.[7]
As a boy's name in the United States, Stacy made a few appearances on the top 1000 list in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but really began to gain popularity in the 1940s. Usage was never as high as the girl's name, but reached a peak of popularity in 1968 as the 157th most popular boy's name in the United States. Usage then began a gradual decline, and Stacy last appeared on the boy's chart in the year 1993.[8]
