The name Sophie is originally from the Greek word that means 'wisdom' and came to be an English female given name by way of the French. The original Greek name was Sophia, and was transformed into Sophie in French. The form Sophie became popular in the UK and in the US, but Sophia is also a popular name in English, so it isn't that Sophie completely replaced Sophia. ^[1]

The name Sophie has gone full circle in the US during the twentieth century. The name began the 20th century near the top 100 female given names in the US and fell all the way down to almost off the top 1000 female given names by the 1950s. It began climbing the charts again in the 1990s and has had a quick rise to its current spot, which is that in 2006 it was ranked the 125th most popular given name for girls in the US. The name is extremely popular around the globe; perhaps its popularity in America is still on the rise? ^[2]
