Silas is of Latin origin, the short form of Silvanus, a Greek name meaning "forest" or "wood." It was often used by the Puritans in the seventeeth century.[1]

According to the Social Security Administration, the name Silas was a favorite choice at the beginning of the twentieth century, ranking among the top 400 names for boys until 1919.
