From the Arabic word meaning "witness", Shahid is found as a word in the Holy Qur'an. It is therefore found largely in the Islamic world or given to Muslim males anywhere in the world. Shahid is particularly popular in South Asia. The spelling variant Syahid is found in Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia.

The Arabic spelling is شاهد consisting of the letters sheen, alif, ha and dal. Thus the letter "a" represents a long vowel. This is different from the word "shaheed" with a short a, meaning martyr.
