Sean is the Irish version of John, a Hebrew name meaning “god is gracious.” ^[1] It is derived from the French variation of John: Jean. Usage of the name outside of Ireland only began in the twentieth century. ^[1]

POPULARITY

• Sean first appeared in the top 1000 names in the United States in 1943, and it has dramatically increased in popularity since then, gaining the most momentum during the 1960s. Usage was highest in the 1970s and has tapered off a bit since then, but Sean ranked number 68 on the list in 2006. Alternative spellings such as Shawn and Shaun have been less popular, but still hold a place in the top 500. These spelling variations were most popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The spelling Shawn is also used as a girl’s name, and last appeared in the top 1000 in 1988 at number 898. 1971 saw the highest usage of Shawn as a girl’s name, when the popularity rose to 167. ^[1]
