FACTS
The name Saul is found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. In the Old Testament, Saul was anointed as the first king of Israel when the people demanded a monarch. Because of his disobedience to God, however, his position was given to David, a shepherd who had fought for him against the Philistine Goliath. Saul then viewed David as the enemy and made several attempts to kill him. Saul and his sons later died in a battle, however, and David became the second king of Israel.
In the New Testament, Saul is the original name of the apostle Paul before his conversion to Christianity.
