ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Sarah is Hebrew in origin. Its earliest appearance is in the Bible, Book of Genesis, and first book of the Bible's Old Testament (as well as the Torah in Judaism). Sarah was Abraham's wife. Abraham was visited by God and told to leave Ur of the Chaldeans (ancient Babylon) with his wife Sarai (God changed her name to Sarah later) and go to a land that God would show them. God promised to make a nation from them (even though Sarah was well past child-bearing age) and bless the entire world through their children. The name Sarah has been used in numerous languages throughout history. The name is closely associated with Christianity and Judaism.

The name became popular in the 1700s and has maintained its popularity though the years since that time. Sarah has been in the top 100 in the United States since 1900. It is ranked as #4 in popularity for the past decade. It ranks #15 on the Social Security Administration's latest list.
