ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Sandra comes from the Italian name Allesandra, which is itself a variation of the name Alexandra, the feminine version of Alexander. The definition of Alexander is “defender of mankind,” and thus, Sandra holds the same meaning. While it was originally a shortened form of Allesandra, Sandra is now used as a stand-alone name rather than simply a nickname. Sandra may also be a shortened form of the Greek name Cassandra.
Sandra is a popular name in the United States. It saw its highest popularity between the years 1940 and 1952, when it consistently remained in the top 10 of the top 1000 most popular girls’ names. Usage increased substantially in the early twentieth century, climbing quickly from the lower rungs of the top 1000 to the upper ones. It did not appear in the list before 1913. Usage has tapered off since the mid-century, but the name remains popular. In 2006, Sandra ranked as number 364.
