Samuel is both a boy's first name and a surname. Samuel is from biblical times— most notably Samuel of the bible who helped lead Israel.[1] This Samuel also anointed Saul and David as kings of Israel.[1] But Samuel was a rare name until after the Reformation, when biblical names became more popular.

- Samuel Morse originated the Morse code with his assistant, and improved the telegraph machine to be practical (originally the telegraph machine require 26 wires, Morse created a one wire telegraph system).[1] The telegraph allowed for speedy cross-country communications, and the Morse code is still in use today.
