Re: Where Are The Conservatives in Local Foods?
July 09, 2009
"Brilliant post man! Absolutely brilliant! I read Crunchy Cons and the Cultural Creatives (by Paul Ray & Sherry Ruth Anderson) at the same time a couple years ago and it turned me upside down. I'm a Christian who is not well versed in the tenants of conservatism and liberalism but I no longer draw those cultural boxes around folks like I did. The old definitions no longer hold in my opinion. I tend to think of our society as divided into Traditionalists, Modernists, and Cultural Creatives. It's a critique of worldviews that Paul Ray puts forth in his book. They are like underground philosophical rivers driving everyone's point of view. These undercurrents cross the Conservative/Liberal definitions and bring new light to what is going on culturally. The biggest obstacle I see to Conservatives joining the sustainable food movement, is, as others have mentioned, the cultural association. They have drawn a line in the cultural sand over certain hot topics and that's where they make their..."

Cultural Creatives - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
March 26, 2009
Cultural Creatives is a term coined by sociologist Paul H. Ray and psychologist Sherry Ruth Anderson to describe a large segment in Western society that has recently developed beyond the standard paradigm of Modernists versus Traditionalists or Conservatists. The concept was presented in their book The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People Are Changing the World (2000), where they claim to have found that 50 million adult Americans (slightly over one quarter of the adult population) can now be identified as belonging to this group. They estimated that there were another 80–90 million Cultural Creatives in Europe in 2000.

My Brain is Abuzz With Our Changing Minds
October 31, 2008
"Hi Anders,

Thanks for the comment, I am glad to hear that you find the topic interesting. I am very passionate about it but you can never be too sure if others will feel the same. I read a variety of genres but I am going to assume (and I hope I am correct) that you are interested in what I am reading and have read that relates to the topic at hand. 1. The World Is Flat - Thomas L. Friedman (globalization & creativity) 2. The Cultural Creatives - Paul H. Ray & Sherry Ruth Anderson (Cultural Creativity) 3. Karma Queens, Geek Gods and Innerpreneurs - Ron Rentel (Innerpreneurship) 4. A Whole New Mind - Daniel H. Pink (creativity & globalization) 5. The Rise of the Creative Class - Richard Florida (creativity & globalization) Friedman recently published a follow-up book called, Hot, Flat and Crowded which is waiting to be read by me. I would also recommend it as well as Florida's follow-up books, The Flight of the Creative Class and Who's Your City. Thanks for reading,

Tara"
