ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Ruth is a Hebrew name meaning friend or companion. Ruth is the name of the central character in the Book of Ruth in the Old Testament: she is a Moabite woman, an ancestor of King David. Ruth has been useed since the Protestant Reformation as a Christian name. After the birth of "Baby" Ruth Cleveland (1891-1904), the daughter of President Grover Cleveland, the name became very popular.[1]

  • Babe Ruth was born George Herman Ruth, Jr. His nicknames include: The Babe, The Great Bambino, The Sultan of Swat, and The Home Run King. He was one of only two people to hit three home runs in a World Series game. Ruth set a record for hitting 60 home runs in 154 games. The record stood until 1961. Ruth was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
  • Ruth Bader Ginsburg was born Joan Ruth Bader. She attended college at Cornell University. Later, she entered Harvard Law School. Ginsburg spent some of her spare time assisting in the translation of the Swedish Code of Judicial Procedure. She was the second woman to join the law faculty of Rutgers University. In 1972, she was the head of the Women's Rights Project with the ACLU. Ginsburg left Rutgers to teach at Columbia Law School. President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. The Senate confirmed Ruth Ginsburg's nomination to the Supreme Court in 1993.
