ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Rosalind is derived from "hros lind," an ancient Germanic name meaning "gentle horse."
Poet Edmund Spenser (1552-1599) believed he created the name Rosalind for his first major poetic work The Shepheardes Calendar (1579). He tried to hide the identity of the object of affection within the pastorals, using the name Rosalind as an anagram of selected letters from the woman's real name, Rosa Daniel.
Thomas Lodge later used the name for the title character of his 1599 novel Rosalynde. Shortly after Lodge's novel was published, William Shakespeare drew upon both the name and story for his play As You Like It.
Even if the name Rosalind had been commonly used before, it was the work of these three Elizabethan writers that gave it with the poetic connotations it has today.[1]
