ORIGIN & HISTORY

The name Rick is a combined variant of the names Richard and Frederick. The Normans introduced Richard to England in the 12th-century, by King Richard I, who was also called Richard the Lionhearted. He ruled with a heavy hand, but was hardly ever in England, due to fighting his relatives in France. The English seemed to idolize him, even though times were not good under his reign. Richard was a name given to British boys for thousands of years after Richard the Lionhearted ruled.

POPULARITY

The name Rick has not been a popular name for boys by itself. However, when used as the full name of Richard, it has been a very popular name for boys in the United States, especially during the 1950's and the 1960's. Every year after 1960, the name Rick has dropped further on the U. S. census charts, where it plummeted to an unpopular 930 in 2006. Richard has held up over the years and in the 2000's has been in the top 100-currently at the 81st spot.

• Humphrey Bogart's character in the movie, " Casablanca," was named Rick Blaine.
• Desi Arnaz played Ricky Ricardo in the 1950's TV series "I Love Lucy," and Lucy and Ricky's son was named Little Ricky on the show.
• "Rico Suave" is the name of the 1991 hit song by Gerardo, which by the way made him a one hit wonder.
• King Richard I is still an incredibly popular figure in today's world. He has been portrayed in many movies, including by Richard Harris in the movie, "Robin and Marian" in 1976. King Richard I also stars in several video games where he fights many battles, such as: "Lion heart: Legacy of the Crusader."

• Richard Nixon became the first U.S. President to step down from the Presidency in 1974, due to his impending impeachment for his involvement in the Watergate Scandal. Born on January 9, 1913, he died several days later after a stroke on April 22, 1994.
• Heartthrob Rick Nelson starred on the TV series, "Ozzie and Harriet" in the 1950's and became a popular singer in the late 1950's. He is best remembered for his 1972 hit song "Garden Party". He was born on May 8, 1940 and died on December 31, 1985 in a plane crash.
• Funky singer, Rick James who was born on February 1, 1948, had several chart topping hits, including, "Super Freak". He died from a heart attack on August 6, 2004.
• Australian actor and singer, Rick Springfield who was born on August 23, 1949, starred on the TV soap opera, "General Hospital" in the 1980's and was asked back on "G.H." in December of 2005. He also had several chart busting hits including, "Jessie's Girl."
• Canadian funny man and actor, Rick Moranis, who was born on April 18, 1953 starred in many comedies including, "My Blue Heaven", and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids."
