ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Portia comes from a Roman clan name, derived from the Latin “porcus” or “porcius,” which means “pig.” [1] [1] It is a feminized version of the clan name. Modern usage may also refer to the sports car, Porsche. [1]

POPULARITY

Portia has hovered near the bottom of the list of top 1000 baby names in the United States. In 1991 it was listed as number 961, and has since dropped. It saw its highest twentieth century popularity in 1949 when it reached to number 590. The alternative spelling “Porsha” was only in the top 1000 between 1986 and 1994, reaching its peak at 665 in 1988. [1] It is a substantially more popular name in Australia, and was recorded as number 156 in the year 2000, and has been steadily gaining popularity since the late 90s. [1]

  • Portia is one of the characters in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. She is a rich heroine whose father demands her suitors choose the correct one of three caskets in order to win her hand. She marries Bassanio, who chooses correctly, and later in the play she appears disguised as a man to be his lawyer in a trial between Antonio and Shylock.
