The name Peter originated from the Greek “Petros,” which stemmed from “petrus” meaning “a rock” and “petros” meaning “a stone.” Gaelic forms of Peter are “Peadair,” “Peader” (Scottish) and “Peadar.” The Welsh version of the name is “Pedr.”
In the Bible, Peter is one of the twelve apostles; his birth name was Simon. Peter is considered one of the founders - and the first Pope - of the Christian Church, along with Paul.
Peter the Great was the first Russian Emperor in the late 17th and early 18th century. He also built St Petersburg.
