The name Pauline comes to the English world from France and that, as so many European things do, by way of Rome. It is possible that its original meaning is that of small or humble, but it could also be a derivative of the Paulinus family name.[1]
POPULARITY
Pauline has been an extremely popular girl's name. From 1880 until 1950 it had been ranked in the top 200 names. The name's usage peaked between 1910 and 1920 when it was ranked the 35th most popular and when it fell out of the top 200 in 1960, it only fell to 210. However it has been on a rapid decline since 1960 and has fallen out of the top 1000 names since 1997.[1]
FACTS
- The Perils of Pauline is, perhaps, the most famous of the serial cliffhangers. It starred Pearl White and was released in 1914 as a silent film in 20 episodes, or chapters, each ending with the heroine, Pauline, about to meet her demise and leaving viewers anxiously awaiting the release of the next installment.[1]
- Pauline Bonaparte, even though she had a less than virtuous lifestyle, was the most loyal of Napoleon's siblings, selling her possessions and moving to Elba to assist her brother during his exile. Pauline was the only one of Napoleon's siblings to visit him at Elba.[1]
NAMESAKES
- Pauline's Trestle is a piece of railroad track located near New Hope, PA. It is so named because it is the location where Pauline, in the silent films The Perils of Pauline, was tied to railroad tracks awaiting her certain demise.[1]
- J. Pauline Spaghetti Island and J. Pauline Spaghetti Hotel are two of the more famous landmarks in Batman's fictional Gotham City, obviously paying tribute to the American Industrialist, J. Paul Getty.[1]

- Pauline Kael was a film critic for The New Yorker known for her opinionated movie reviews that tended to go against the majority of her colleagues and for her informal writing style. Her scathing reviews of commercially successful films like The Sound of Music, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr.Zhivago and A Hard's Day Night actually led to her being fired from McCall's.[1]
- Pauline Cushman was one of several women employed as Union's spies. Previously she has tried unsuccessfully to make a career as an actress, but in 1863 she was offered this new opportunity. By following the Confederate army in Tennessee and Kentucky and found that her beauty enabled her to secure information for the Union army. However, she was eventually caught with confidential papers and sentenced to be hanged. The Union army mounted a last minute rescue attempt and succeeded in bringing Cushman back to the North where President Lincoln made her an honorary major.[1]
- Pauline Reese is a Country and Western singer whose roots spring from East Texas. Touring primarily in Texas and Oklahoma, she and her band, High Country, have performed as warm up acts for Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and many others. [1]
- Pauline Bonaparte, Napoleon's younger sister, had many love affairs. Her first marriage to General Charles Leclerc was arranged when Napoleon caught the two of them together, but the marriage did not curtail her infidelities.
