ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Paul derives from the Latin paulus meaning “small,” which originated as a Roman surname. The Gaelic forms of Paul are “Pal” and “Pol.”

In the Bible, Paul was one of the Twelve Apostles. Additionally, he is credited with fourteen epistles in the New Testament of the Bible. Paul is considered a co-founder of the Christian Church, along with Peter.

The name Paul has belonged to six Catholic Popes, dating from the 8th century to the 20th century. Paul was also the name of the Catherine the Great’s son, who was Emperor of Russia at the turn of the 19th century.
