ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Parker was an occupational surname, given to the gamekeepers of Medieval parks[1], which were areas where noblemen could hunt game.[1] Parker may also be an Americanized version of similar-sounding Jewish surnames.[1] For example, actress Sarah Jessica Parker's family surname was originally Bar-Kahn, meaning "son of Kohen," but it was changed to Parker in America.[1]

Parker began to be used as a given name in the 19th century.[1] It may have simply been the surname transferred to a first name, or it may have derived from "Park," which was a medieval familiar form of Pete.[1]

POPULARITY

Parker was quite popular as a boy's name in the 19th century, but it lost favor in the 20th, riding in the lower ranks of the top 1000 chart for the first half and dropping off the chart completely during the 1960s and 70s. The 1980s, however, saw a revival of Parker's popularity. Usage remains higher than ever: in 2007, Parker ranked as the 108th most popular boy's name in the United States.

As a girl's name, Parker has had a shorter history. It first appeared on the top 1000 chart in 1999, and has risen gradually in popularity. In 2007, Parker was the 591st most popular girl's name in the United States.[1]

Parker is also popular in other countries[1]:

  • 83rd, Canada (boy), 2005
  • 563rd, Canada (girl), 2005
  • 288th, Australia (boy), 2003
  • 683rd, Australia (girl), 2002

Parker is a common last name. It's the 47th most common surname in the United States (according to the 1990 U.S. Census).
