HISTORY

Before the word orange became common in the English-speaking world, the color was referred to as geoluhread, which translates into yellow-red in modern English. Orange derives its name from the citrus fruit, which was introduced to Europe with the Sanskrit word nāranja.[1]

  • Orange has something of a geographical etymology, following the development of trade routes to France.
    • Originally from the Sanskrit narangah, or naranga-s, as it journeyed west it became:
      • the Persian narang
      • the Arabic naranj
      • the Italian arancia (originally narancia [1] ), the Spanish naranja, or the Old Italian melarancio
      • the Medieval Latin pomum de orenge
      • the Old French orenge

The loss of the “n” at the beginning of the word is explained by a few different theories, the most likely of which is the influence of the name of the French town of Orange, which was the center of the orange trade. Another theory is that through the process of metanalysis (a shift in the division between words in a phrase; misdivision: “A nickname” resulted from metanalysis of “an ekename.” [1] ), the word developed from the combination of une narange. Finally, it could have been due to its association with the Old High German gold. [1] Orange was first recorded as a color name in English in 1512, in the court of King Henry VIII.

SIGNIFICANT FACTS

  • No word rhymes with orange. The phrase "door hinge" sort of does, though.
  • Orange is a rare girl's name, which includes the variations Orangetta and Orangina.[1]
  • The Web colour orange, defined as FFA500, is the only named color defined in CSS but not in HTML 4.01.[1]
