ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Norman derives from the German “nortman” or “nordman” meaning “northman” or “Norseman.” It is a combination of “nort” or “nord” meaning “north” and “man” meaning “man.” In the 10th century, the name was used to identify the Vikings who settled on the French coast. The region later became known as Normandy, at which time the name was used to refer to native inhabitants. The Normans conquered England in the 11th century.
