Neil is believed to have begun in Ireland as Niul (with a later derivative as Niall). The name Niul was adopted by Vikings in their travels to Iceland as Njal (Njál, Njála). From Iceland, Njal then spread to other parts of Scandinavia. During Viking travels and sieges, these Scandinavian vikings further used the name for their issue in England, where it became part of the Latin language with such derivations as Nigellus. During the 700s, and with the vikings’ spread into Normandy, France, many then became what we know as Normans. With the evolution of the language into what was then to become French, Njal became a version of Nel which then further evolved into surnames Neal and Nelson. During this time, it also retained some popularity in Ireland.[1]

From the Middle Ages onwards, Neil was mainly found in Ireland and the English-Scottish Border region. With the advent of the 20th century, its popularity has increased steadily into all areas of the English-speaking world.[1]

The name Neel comes from the Sanskrit word Nilakantha (pronounced as neela-kanta), which historically refers to the hue, in this case a sky blue color, of the Hindu deity Shiva's neck as he drinks poison.
