ORIGIN & HISTORY

Hebrew, Nathan[1]

Nathan is a common moniker in the Hebrew Bible, found in numerous chapters and verses. However, the first and most significant occurrence of the name refers to Nathan the Prophet. Nathan served the Hebrew King David and his successor, King Solomon. Nathan the Prophet is a significant figure in the Book of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles within the Hebrew Bible.

Napana & Natana are Hawaiian forms of this name[1].

POPULARITY

The name, Nathan, is generally given by Hebrew or English speaking parents and it has been consistently popular since the latter part of the twentieth century. Indeed, Nathan has ranked inside the top 100 among newborn American boys since 1970, peaking at number 20 in 2004 and 2005. The popularity of Nathan in America was at its nadir between 1940 and 1950, rising sharply in the following years; perhaps, the increase came as a result of the influx of Jewish immigrants after World War II.
