ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Narayana is a Sanskrit name, and there are several possible meanings. The most probable interpretation of this name is "son of man," or "son of Primal man," since that is the translation given by Sanskrit dictionaries.[1] The root word nara refers to "man", although it may also be interpreted as "water."[1] The association with water refers to the god Narayana, who was said to be omniscient and infinite as the ocean.[1]
Variations on the meaning of Narayana include "path of man,"[1], "eternal man"[1] and "the abode of beings."[1] The numerous meanings can be attributed to the ambiguous interpretations of the two parts of the name, nara and ayana. This is a complicated name, with many shades of meaning.
In Hindu tradition, Narayana is another name of the important god Vishnu. Chanting the name Narayana is said to destroy evil and uplift the fallen.[1]
POPULARITY
In the United States, Narayana is a very uncommon name. It has not appeared in the top 1000 most popular boys' names in any recorded year.[1]
Narayana is a more popular name in India. However, name statistics are not accurately kept in India, so it is difficult to determine just how popular a name is. One source suggests that the variant spelling Narayan is currently one of the top ten boy's names for infants in India.[1]
FACTS
- There is a complicated math problem called Narayana's Cows, attributed to a 14th century Indian mathematician named Narayana. It reads as follows:
- "A cow produces one calf every year. Beginning in its fourth year, each calf produces one calf at the beginning of each year. How many cows and calves are there altogether after 20 years?"[1]
- While many of the Hindu deities are depicted with multiple limbs or multiple heads to represent their power and presence, Narayana is sometimes called the "thousand-headed one, thousand-eyed, and thousand-limbed." He is considered a truly omnipotent deity.[1]
