ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Naomi is a biblical name with Hebrew origins that literally translates as “pleasantness.” Additionally, Naomi comes from "Na'omi for "my delight" and from "no'am" for "pleasantness, delightfulness" and from stem of "na'em" for "was pleasant, was lovely." In the Bible, Naomi was the wise mother-in-law of Ruth. Although at one time considered to be mostly Jewish and used largely by Jewish families, but after the Reformation, it became more popular among the Puritans and came more into more general use.
According to the Social Security Administration, Naomi has consistently been one of the most popular names in the United States for the past 100 year. The year 2007 marks the highest Naomi has reached in the 1000 most popular names in the country. Prior to 2007, Naomi last came close to this level of popularity in the 1910s when its closest high ranking was at 130th in 1916. Naomi remained in the top 200 most popular names until the early 1940s when it slid to 208th (1942) and declined further in the 1950s where it hit the 300s for the first time. By the 1960s, it fell into the 400s only to rebound in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s back into the 200 range. By the 21st Century, Naomi has been increasing steadily year by year to its current high point. (See chart below.)
