The Early Dew Days
Mountain Dew was invented in the 1940s. It was made in Knoxville, Tennessee, and flavored with lemon and lime. The drink was created as a mixer for Whiskey, which is why it was named "Mountain Dew" -- a slang term for moonshine.[1]
Mountain Dew Slogans
The first slogan for the highly caffeinated beverage, in 1965, was "Ya-Hoo Mountain Dew. It'll tickle your inards." The commercials featured a cartoon hillbilly (Willy Gran’Pappy Hillbilly). In 1968, they came up with the new slogan, "Get That Barefoot Feelin' Drinkin' Mountain Dew."
Additional slogans:
1973 - Put a Little Yahoo in Your Life
1974 - Hello Sunshine, Hello Mountain Dew
1979 - Reach for the Sun, Reach for Mountain Dew
1981 - Give Me a Dew
1983 - Dew it To it
1986 - Dew it Country Cool.
1992 - Get Vertical[1]
In 1995, Mountain Dew sponsored the first X-Games, with a more athletic approach. They came up with the new slogan, "Do the dew."[1]
Pepsi Takeover
In 1964, Pepsi bought Mountain Dew, on its the third edition of the soda. Pepsi made the drink into a worldwide success and added new flavors of Mountain Dew, including Code Red and Pitch Black. [1]
What's in the Dew?
The current beverage contains concentrated orange juice, which gives it that tangy flavor. In Japan, however, they substitute tangerine juice. Mountain Dew has all the other standard soda-flavor: high fructose corn syrup, carbonated water, caffeine. In Australia and Canada, however, Mountain Dew has no caffeine added at all. It does have Yellow No. 5, which causes allergic reactions in some people. This perhaps inspired the urban legend that the Yellow No. 5 reduces sperm count.[1]
