ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Morris is primarily English and can be a variant of the name Maurice. As Morris, it was a common name in the Middle Ages. Like many names during that period, it waxed and waned in popularity and became popular again in English-speaking countries in the last century or so. Morris and some close derivatives also served as a surname, often in Jewish lineages. It is also believed to be an Anglicized form of “Moses.” [1]
POPULARITY
According to the Social Security Administration, Morris has not been one of the top 1000 most popular names in the United States since 1994. Then it placed 977th.
Morris has slowly and steadily gone into decline in popularity since the beginning of the last century. In 1907, for example, it ranked 96th (out of 1000). During the teens it remained in the top 100 and was still strong into the 1920s through the 1940s where it still remained in the top 200. It wasn’t until the 1950 and 1960s where the decline was greater and brought it closer to 400. By the 1970s it was in the 400s, the 1980s saw a decline into the 600s and by the 1990s it dropped to the 900s.
