NUTS & BOLTS

  • Here are the NUTS:
    • The author of the best article will receive $50. The winning article will be featured on the home page and added to the Winning Articles Page of Fame
  • And the BOLTS:
    • A new contest subject will be announced at the beginning of the month, and all entries are due on the last day of the month. Winners will be announced approximately one week from the due date. Articles will be judged based on the quality of the information (read: research) and the fluency of the writing (note: we like laughing and learning). To enter an article simply (1) set up an account using your full name (or pen name) (2) add an article to the wiki and (3) send an email to wiki [at] name.com with the subject line "Monthly Contest" and your article title in the body. (Note: new writers should check out the help page for details on adding an article, and feel free to email with questions or concerns). Thanks for writing!

NOVEMBER

How did that thing get its name?

Why is an iPod called an iPod? Where did they come up with the name Milky Way? This contest is about 'stuff' names. You will be judged on the depth of research (please cite your sources), the sparkiness of the factoids, and the quality of writing. Check out the articles Mountain Dew and Hot Dog for examples.

Since we can't have duplicate articles for this contest, once someone begins writing a page, they have 'claimed' it -- and no one else can write it. Better start writing soon if you've got an idea! To begin a 'Stuff Page,' click on the CREATE PAGE button and then select the 'Stuff Names' icon. Want help with an idea? How about starting one of these pages: 7 Up, Burrito, Teflon, Cellophane, Sputnik, Casserole, Spaghetti, Linguine, Kit Kat, Cornucopia, Popsicle, Hamburger, French Fries, Wii, Coca-Cola. Please feel free to email wiki [at] name.com if you have any questions whatsoever.
