ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Miranda was created by William Shakespeare from the feminine form of the Latin gerundive ‘mirandus’ (admirable, lovely) and from the verb 'mirari' (to wonder at, to admire), giving it the meaning "she who must be admired". In Shakespeare’s play The Tempest, the heroine, fifteen-year-old Miranda, has never met a man other than her father, Prospero. When an expedition seeking Prospero comes along, she meets and proposes marriage to young Fernando, later delivering the famous line, “O brave new world that has such people in’t!” [1]
