ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Milton was originally an English surname with at least two distinct traceable origins in history and with respect to the etymology and importance of the name. Most directly, Milton likely comes from “mylentun” for mill town. That is, a town with a mill or the town known to have the mill. It is also likely that Milton was a contraction of “Middleton” – the town in the middle (from middle and ton = town). This “middle” could have been the middle of large land mass, water body or river, or the distance between two places.

As with many surnames, Milton was adopted by families as a first and middle name in order to keep in alive and relevant in families and their histories as people within those original families marries. This was to become a common practice to preserve family names. [1]
