Michael is most commonly associated with one of the seven arch angels. Documentation states that Michael fought Satan and his followers in heaven and therefore became known as one of the principle arch angels. In the Catholic religion Michael is referred to as a saint due to his holiness. In British tradition, along with St. George, Michael is recognized as the saint of chivalry. Jewish faith portrays Michael as the "advocate of the Jews". Throughout Islam Michael, also known as Mikhail, is thought to be the second angel after Gabriel as was announced by Mohammed on his death bed.

Over the past 100 years Michael has nearly remained one of the top 50 most popular boys name dipping only occasionally below the threshold. The American Social security record show that for the past 50 years Michael has fluctuated within the top two positions. From 1954 to 1999 Michael was ranked as the most popular name. Since 1999 to present day, Michael has slipped only slightly to second place.

St Michael is the Patron saint of emergency and armed forces. Just as according to scripture god felt Michael would lead his army against evil, soldiers, armed forces and rescue teams look to Michael as their patron saint. Throughout the world people still celebrate St Michaels feast day on the September 29th. In Australia this day is also used to commemorate police remembrance day. Michael is also a common surname. A well known personality with such a surname is international Singer, George Michael.

• Skellig Michael (Sceilg Mhichil (Irish pronunciation) meaning Michael's rock). Skellig Michael is an island 12km off of the coast of County Kerry. The site is renowned throughout the world as a good archeology site for its illustration of Christian monasticism.

• St Michael's cathedral, Toronto, Ontario, Canada: One of the oldest landmarks in Toronto. The cathedral was built in the 1800's mainly through the help of Irish immigrants.

• Michael J Fox: Born 9th June 1961. This Hollywood actor is most recognized for his roles in the Back to the Future trilogy. After his diagnosis in 1991, Michael J Fox has become a famous advocate for Parkinson's disease.
