Melanie is derived from the Greek Melania from the root melas meaning "black" or "dark." Two 5th century Roman Saints, a grandmother and granddaughter, popularized the name. They were renknowned for their pious works and service to the poor. Saint Melanie the Elder was an early pilgrim to Jerusalem.
Melanie was introduced to England during the Middle Ages.
Much of the popularity rise of the name Melanie has been attributed to Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, published in 1936, which resulted in the film adaptation in 1939 starring Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. Melanie Hamilton Wilkes was a fictional character that appeared in the book and the film. The movie Gone With the Wind won eight Academy Awards (Oscars), including Best Picture in 1939.
