Name: maynard Origin: German,, Meaning (no case): strong power, strength, hardy

Maynard evolved to its present form from a variety of derivatives seemingly from mostly Germanic regions and etymology but also with possible French and Italian influences. In most cases during this period it was used as a surname. Germanic versions include Mainhart, Meginhard, Meginrad and Meinrad. In England, Maynard evolved more popularly to spellings including Maynerd, Maynhard, Maignard and Mainard. Outside of geographical areas of Germanic influence, the French-speaking areas of Europe used Menard, while the Italian used a more traditional “i” or “e” suffix with Menardi, Mainardi and Menarde versions. [1]

Later, as surnames became threatened in family lines through marriage and multiple family names Maynard, like many others, was used as a middle or first name.
