The name Martin derives from the Latin “Martinus” meaning “of Mars” or “war-like” in reference to the Roman mythological God Mars – the God of war. Gaelic forms of Martin are “Mairtfn,” “Martan” and “Martainn” (Scottish).
Saint Martin of Tours was a bishop in the 4th century. He is the patron saint of France, beggars, wine growers and innkeepers. According to legend, on a cold winter night, he gave half of his cloak to a beggar.
Five Popes were named Martin from the 7th through 15th centuries.
The German Martin Luther (1483-1546) was a church reformer who popularized the name in the Middle Ages.
