ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Marlon is believed to be of French or English origin possibly from the name Marcelon, a French diminutive of Marcel. Marcel is derived from the Latin names Marcellus and the Latin name Marcus -- a possible reference to Mars, the Roman god of war. ^[1]

POPULARITY

According to the Social Security Administration, Marlon did not rank in the top 1000 most popular names in the United States until 1950. Then, introduced at 951, it experienced a steady and aggressive increase until it reached it zenith in popularity in 1971 – at 277th. The overall period of the 1950s saw a steady increase in the popularity of Marlon, perhaps with the popularity of motion picture actor Marlon Brando. Marlon remained in the top 500 most popular names until the turn of this century (see chart below) where it still retains a respectable ranking.

Marlon Brando (1924 - 2004) was perhaps not only the most well-known Marlon in history in his role as an accomplished actor, but he also had the most to do with the popularity of the name. Although well known for his roles as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and as Terry Malloy in On the Waterfront, he remained important in his later acting life. He won an Academy Award for his role of Vito Corleone in The Godfather and reprised that role in The Godfather II. It is unfortunate that actors are sometimes not fully recognized for their accomplishments, and even their humanity while they are alive, and Marlon Brando was no exception. Despite some family and personal problems later in life, his death brought intensive media coverage and contemporaries and colleagues forward to discuss the personal and professional impact he made. It is likely that "Marlon" will have a largely singular affiliation for some time.
