Maja was the Roman goddess of fertility and of the growth in spring. The name for the month May is derived from the goddess, Maja.[1]

Maja is a rare first name in the US, and has not appeared in the top 1,000 names for some time. However, in Sweden, the name is quite common, among the top 20 in the past decade. In 2007, Maja was the second most popular name in Sweden, the 10th in Denmark and the 30th in Norway.[1]

- In Greek mythology, Maja was later seen as identical to the goddess Maia. Maia is the oldest of the Pleiades (the seven daughters of Atlas and the nymph Pleione). Maia was the mother of Hermes by Zeus.[1]
