Name: mack Origin: Scottish,, Meaning (no case): son

Mack (or in some cases “Mac,” is often an abbreviated version of a Scottish surname such as MacIntosh, Macdonald, Mackenzie, etc.) Obviously more effective as such in non-Scottish areas – where there would be multiple “Macs” and thus making its role as a denominator less effective, it served to identify certain individuals of Scottish descent within a community. Mac and Mack also became almost exclusively masculine first and middle names throughout the centuries. [1]

According to the Social Security Administration, Mack is not in the top 1000 names for any year of birth in the last 15 years.

However, Mack was much more popular earlier in the United States earlier in the last century. Mack last fell within the top 1000 names in the United States in 1989 as number 867. It actually was the 107th name in popularity in 1907, 100 years ago, and very steadily trended downward until 1989. Mack never really experienced any overly precipitous dip or aggressive spike during the past 100 years – it just steadily declined. [1]
