ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Luther has German and Hebrew roots and means some version of 'famous warrior' in both languages. An alternative idea about the meaning of the name Luther comes from the French, in which the name Luther can refer to someone who plays the lute. Historically, the Biblical roots suggest that the name is more firmly rooted in association to Germanic roots stemming from Hebrew, influence by usage in the Bible. [1]
The name Luther has also been made into the church (Lutheran) which refers back to Martin Luther, who is credited with being very strongly behind the Protestant Reformation in Europe. He lived from 1483-1546 and changed the course of European history by changing religious common values. [1] Martin Luther King was named after Martin Luther by his father Martin Luther King Sr. Both Jr. and Sr. were baptized Michael King, but MLK Sr. changed his own name, and the name of his son (MLK Jr.) at the same time in order to honor the German Martin Luther whose ideas inspired the Protestant Revolution.[1]
POPULARITY
Luther was a much more popular given name for boys in the first half of the 20th century than the second half of the 20th century. The name Luther fell off the list of the 1000 most popular given names for boys in 1993, when it was ranked 917th; it hasn't shown back up on the US popular names list since then. [1]
The only place where Luther is still on the list of the top 1000 given names for boys is Australia, where the name ranked 537th in 1997. [1] With so many revered Luther's in the world, perhaps it's time for a revival of this Biblical name?
