ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Lucas is English in origin and is one of the many names that originally served as a surname. Over time, especially centuries, some surnames risk extinction through marriage as the woman’s line of the family marries and the male (husband) surnames become predominant. In an attempt to keep certain family names viable, they are sometimes used as first names or middle names. Lucas is also a derivative of Luke with the Latin origin “man from Lucania." There is reference to it during the Middle Ages, and “it is also the spelling preferred in the Authorized Version of the New Testament, which has had some influence on its selection as a given name.”[1]
