HISTORY AND ORIGIN

The name Lois is thought to have come from the Greek work loion meaning desirable.[1] It is an ancient name being mentioned in the New Testament as the name of Timothy's grandmother (Timothy being a young preacher mentored by Paul; the New Testament has two letters written to him), however it is relatively new to the English world, not surfacing in England until the 16 century,[1] and starting to be used in America by the 1800s. [1]

POPULARITY

Lois was in the top 200 girls' names from 1880 until 1970 when it had fallen to the rank of 254th. In the thirties, it was at the height of its popularity being ranked the 24th most given girl's name and the 47th most popular overall. However, after 1970, its usage waned and it suffered a sharp decline, falling out of the top 1000 names in 1984.[1]

  • Lois McMaster Bujold is an awarding writer of Science Fiction. She has written over 20 books and has won two Nebula Awards for Falling Free and The Mountains of Mourning and three Hugos for The Mountains of Mourning, The Vor Game, Barrayar, and Mirror Dance. She and her two children reside in Minneapolis.[1]
  • Lois Chiles, born in Alice, Texas, is an American actress most famous for playing Roger Moore's leading lady in Moonraker. Before acting, she was a successful model for Glamour magazine and was considered one of the supermodels of the seventies. As an actress she had an uncanny ability to be cast in roles of the murder victim. Such was the case when she played the role of Linnet Ridgeway Doyle in the film adaptation of Agatha Christy's Death on the Nile with Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot. She acknowledges that her claim to fame will be as the Bond girl, Dr. Holly Goodhead, and believes that it "is a fun way to be remembered".[1]
