ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Lillian has two possible origins. It may be a variation of the name Lily, from the name of the flower.[1] Or, it may have evolved as a nickname for Elizabeth as early as the 16th century.[1] It is predominately used for girls, but this was not always the case.[1]
POPULARITY
Lillian was a very popular name in the 19th century, and around the turn of the century, it reached as high as the 10th most popular girl's name in the United States. It remained a top 100 name until 1940, when popularity began a gradual decrease into the 400s. In the 1980s, usage picked up again, and it broke the top 100 list again in 2002. In 2007, Lillian ranked as the 33rd most popular girl's name in the United States.
Variations of the name such as Lilian, Lilia and Lilliana also currently make the top 1000 names list.
As a boy's name, Lillian has not appeared on the top 1000 list since 1914. Its highest ranking was number 482 in 1901.[1]
